Anyone familiar with Poplar and Limehouse in London’s East End may have noticed that new building are mushrooming at an astonishing rate as the area undergoes massive redevelopment. Alongside all the new apartment blocks, there are also some exciting new cultural spaces. we went to visit the multifaceted culture and community hub – Poplar Union
Music in Detention Music In Detention works with immigration detainees, bringing them together with professional musicians and local communities to share, create and enjoy music, enabling often-ignored voices to be heard in new ways. An interview with Gini Simpson and Shammi Pithia, one of the musicians involved in this project.
This month Pearl Wise meets Gini Simpson and Shamni Pithia from Music in Detention an organisation working with immigration detainees in the UK and Steve Lazarus host and producer of the podcast Your London Legacy. She takes a peek behind the scenes at new arts and culture venue Poplar Union and young musicians Rosie Frater-Taylor and Roella Oloro from the Jazznewblood collective play live ahead of their London Jazz Festival performance later this month.
The Arches: E5 Bakehouse
Britain’s railway arches are being sold off by Network rail and thousands of small business are in danger as the rents are bound to be hiked up so much that renting an arch space will no longer be sustainable. The Arches, celebrates the diverse enterprises that are found under railways. To pilot the series we grab a coffee and a loaf of bread and East London’s infamous E5 Bakehouse.
